The Archives Law declared the Military History Archives public archives, performing specialised functions with nationwide competence. As specialised archives, the competence of the Military History Archives covers the documents of the Ministry of Defence and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Hungary, the military organizations under their direct supervision and direction as well as the documents of historic value of their predecessors in title. Furthermore, it collects the private documents of lasting value concerning Hungarian military history.
The Military History Archives as a scientific research organisation processes and makes public the military history material preserved by the institution. In addition to scientific and public collection activities, the archives perform important public office functions as well, issuing certificates of military service. It continuously receives – through the Central Archives of HM HIM (Ministry of Defence, Museum and Institution of Military History) – the documents of the military authorities for safekeeping. At present, the archives preserve the archival material of 4,004 military organizations and persons in 14 main fonds, which means a total of 7,300 linear meters documents. We have 17,158 rolls of motion pictures and 8 million microfilm records. Our audio library consists of about 300 audio recordings, mainly on cassette tapes. To help the orientation in the collections, more than 100 archival aids have been made at different levels and of different types.
