Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences Entz Ferenc Library and Archives (Budapest)

The Entz Ferenc Library and Archives is the successor of the archives established at the University of Horticulture and Food Industry in 1993, which has been operating in a joint organisational framework with the current library since its establishment. The name, which refers to the way the institution operates within a common organisational framework, has been used in the official name of the institution since its integration in 2000. For the next three years, the institution was known as the Horticultural, Food Science and Landscape Architecture Library and Archives of Szent István University (SZIE). As of September 2003, the Buda Campus separated from SZIE and joined the Budapest University of Economics and Public Administration (BÁKE). The new official name of the library and archives was the Budapest University of Economics and Public Administration Library and Archives of Horticulture, Food Science and Landscape Architecture. The name of BÁKE was changed to Corvinus University of Budapest from the academic year 2004/05. In 2005, the Library and Archives of Horticulture, Food Science and Landscape Architecture was renamed after Ferenc Entz, the founder of horticultural education in Hungary. Since then, it has continued its activities under the name of Entz Ferenc Library and Archives, from 2016 again as part of Szent István University (from 2020 Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences).

On the one hand, the Archives collects and preserves documents of lasting value generated by the administrative and other units with a comprehensive function. On the other hand, it collects and preserves the documents of lasting value from the past 150 years of the three university faculties (Horticulture, Food Science and Landscape Architecture) and their associated teaching, research and administrative units that have been operating on the Villányi Road Campus. The oldest sources of institutional history are the preserved students' registers from 1876.

The collection also contains the documents of former and current teachers and university staff (33 fonds), as well as museal documents (both written and material) on the history of Hungarian horticulture. The oldest document of this kind is a contract dated 1697 for the sale of a vineyard. On 1 January 2014, the amount of archival material was 93 fonds, 95 subfonds, 3270 storage units (2869 boxes, 22 dossiers, 383 volumes), totalling 399.55 linear metres. The work of researchers is supported by two source publications, the repertory published in 1999 (also available on the Library and Archives website) and the regularly updated fonds and subfonds index (also available on the Library and Archives website).
